More than a foot massage

I was at the hairdresser’s recently and found myself offering some reflexology advice to help one of the stylists with the back issues he was experiencing.  I didn’t set to work on his feet, but I did show him the area on his hands to alleviate pain and help the body to reset.  I encouraged him to continue doing it for 30 seconds to a minute a few times a day until he felt relief.

For many the idea of pressing reflex points on the feet, hands or face to stimulate a physical reaction seems implausible.  However, the practice dates back to Egyptian times and can be used to help common ailments such as back, neck and shoulder pain, where so many of us carry tension. I also see clients to help them with stress, digestive issues, fertility and hormonal balance and headaches, to name a few.

I mainly work on the feet using oil with techniques based in Ayurveda. While I work on the specific reflexes to help each client, I treat the entire foot, which means the client leaves feeling quite relaxed given the foot massage nature of the session.

Whenever possible, I show clients how to work the corresponding reflex on their hands so that in between appointments, they can continue to stimulate the appropriate reflex.  If a client can spend just a little time each day, the path to balance is faster.

Similar to seeing a physio or having acupuncture, weekly sessions are optimal when dealing with a specific issue, however they can be tailored to whatever works best.
