Recently, I spent a couple days learning reflexology techniques and approaches specifically aimed at women’s health. And since Audrey & Elizabeth primarily supports women, this course was right up my alley.
For the guys who are reading this, please note: sure this isn’t specifically written for you, however it may be the perfect suggestion for a special woman in your life, be it your wife, partner, sister or mother.
Women’s issues seem to have (finally) been gaining more traction this year, however I’m also reminded that so much of our medical knowledge is based on testing that is largely conducted on men. And yet there are so many unique female experiences.
We often wake up each morning, expecting everything to work exactly as it did yesterday. However, if we have altered any of our normal routines (skipped a workout, had an extra glass of wine) or if we didn’t sleep well, this may mean today feels totally different from yesterday. Throw on top of this that our hormone levels are changing regularly and this is why we need to listen to our body even when our mind might be trying to tell us that everything is fine.
This is where reflexology can be so helpful. This complementary therapy is a perfect support for our endocrine system, which can balance our stress levels and hormones. Reflexology releases overworked adrenals so that they produce less cortisol, the stress hormone. When you reset your adrenals, you’ll be less likely to find your day is derailed by a challenging morning commute or slow coffee line.
When we use reflexology on the rest of the endocrine system (pituitary, thyroid, ovaries, pancreas and liver), we balance hormone production, which regulates most of the functions in our body, including hunger, emotions and mood. Ever feel like these aren't in your control at certain times of the month? As our hormone levels change more naturally, our bodies (and our minds) are more equipped to deal with it.
While regular hormonal changes are completely normal, changes to your menstrual cycle and how you feel during each phase are not. Whether it’s PMT, physical discomfort or a change in your flow, this is your body calling attention to the fact that something is not right. As women, it is often common to ignore symptoms or pop a couple ibuprofen to alleviate pain, however this is where I would encourage you to try reflexology instead.
Consider the results from a study on women experiencing menstrual pain, led by a consultant gynaecologist, which found that reflexology is often the best non-invasive solution. For the women in the study treated with reflexology, 85 to 90 per cent of them experienced relief from their symptoms. Alternatively, less than half of the women who had surgery experienced an improvement.
Ensuring you are getting adequate sleep and eating a diet to support your hormones is also highly recommended. For more details on a hormone-balancing diet, I highly recommend the book, Woman Code.
I have worked with clients to balance hormones, support fertility issues, regulate menstrual cycles, reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of perimenopause. Depending upon the issue, a course of 6 to 8 treatments is generally recommended.
For me and so many of my clients, I am convinced reflexology can be a great support. If you have a specific concern and would like to discuss it, please do let me know.
