The eyes have it

Where do you stand on eye cream?  Necessary or not?  I’m a firm believer that eye cream is important even in the most basic skincare routine.

Why use eye cream?
The skin around the eyes is 10 times thinner than the rest of the face and as such needs special care.  It requires a cream that is light in consistency for easy absorption.  Face moisturiser is generally too thick to be helpful.  Also, eye creams contain carefully chosen antioxidants and peptides to focus on delivering just what this part of the face needs.

Where is eye cream applied?
It should be gently patted on the area underneath the eye, reaching down to the top of the cheek bone and then on the upper eyelid, along the brow bone.  Personally, I like the light touch of my ring finger to apply product in this delicate area.  I also make this the first step on my routine, applying it to a cleansed face before any serums or moisturiser.

Please remember, there are no extra points for applying loads of cream.  Using too much will result in puffy eyes and irritation, which is clearly not the goal.

Will eye cream help dark circles or puffiness?
Dark circles: These are genetic and while an eye cream won’t cure the issue, it can help mask it.  When paired with your favourite concealer, you can look like you had a full night’s sleep.  This corrector and concealer combo from Bobbi Brown may be just what you need.

Eye cream that brightens and illuminates will also downplay colour under the eyes.  Check out these options from This WorksOlay or Darphin

Puffiness: To deflate what’s happening in the eye area, choose an eye cream that will constrict blood vessels and reduce the puff.  Caffeine is a helpful ingredient here.  Consider applying one of these: L’Oreal Revitalift Laser Renew, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum and Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream.

And if you only experience occasional puffiness, a jade roller, gua sha or even frozen kitchen spoons on the area can supplement your regular hydrating eye cream.  Relief will be only temporary, but can help before a big presentation or special evening. I also love these eye masks to reduce bags.

Can technology help the eyes?
I love a gadget and fully endorse the Dr Dennis Gross Eye Mask in combination with eye cream.  I'm also trying the NuFace Fix and will update on the results after I've given it a proper test.

When to start using eye cream?
If you are 25 or older, regardless of how your eyes appear, you should be applying eye cream every morning and evening.  It's as simple as that.
