Baby, it's still cold outside

I’d say today officially begins the countdown to spring, however this week’s weather is a reminder that winter is still with us.  Along with chilly temps and snow, your skin may also be reminding you that the season hasn’t changed yet.

Even if you diligently changed your skincare to a richer moisturiser when you brought out your winter coat, at this stage, you may feel like your regular routine is letting you down.  In fact, you may be feeling drier now than you did earlier in the season.  Let’s consider what you can do to alleviate this.

Facial oil
If you’ve gotten to the point when you feel you’ve applied the maximum amount of moisturiser to your face and yet are still finding dry patches, now is the time to introduce a facial oil.  You can use it on your entire face or just on the places where you’re dry, which is what I tend to do.  Facial oil helps to balance your oil production and creates an extra barrier between you and the elements.  When applying it at night, it is the last step in your routine.  If you need more support, it can be used in the morning as well, just before sunscreen. Some options to consider: Darphin, Pixi and Samaya.

Body care
In winter, my hands and lips lose moisture easily, even when temperatures aren’t Arctic.  I try to solve this problem before it starts with regular application of hand cream and lip balm rather than waiting until I feel dryness.  With a protective layer applied, there’s less of an opportunity for these easy to chap parts to turn crunchy.

This preventative cure also applies to lotion after a bath or shower, particularly if your legs seem to be shedding at the end of the day.  I use body oil or a dry body spray to keep my skin supple.  And I love this high street moisturiser if things ever get away from me and become too scaly.

If daily moisturising needs a boost, I suggest dry brushing before getting into the shower.  This will exfoliate your skin, leaving it smooth and ready to receive a luscious lotion.

Hopefully these tips will help you keep your skin in balance while Mother Nature reminds us who is in charge.
