Spotlight on: azelaic acid

I’m continuing on our journey about skincare ingredients (retinolsqualaneniacinamide and ferulic acid covered previously) and today, I’m writing about azelaic acid, which is particularly good for skin experiencing rosacea or acne.

I know, you read acid and think how can that be good on skin that is sensitive or breaking out? Do not fear: this ingredient is friendly.  In fact, when used morning and night on clean skin before moisturiser and sunscreen, application of this acid works with your skin to help it calm sensitivity and redness.  It helps soothe your skin and sweet talks it into more normal operation.

Azelaic acid also operates as a gentle leave-on, anti-microbial exfoliator that clears pores.  So if you are experiencing acne breakouts on or underneath the skin, this ingredient can help to diminish the appearance of spots on the surface and neutralise what’s underneath.  Importantly, it also prevents the spread of bacteria, which causes more breakouts.  Acne sufferers often turn to benzoyl peroxide for help, however azelaic acid provides support that is far less drying.  It is also helpful in fading post-acne marks.

Suitable for any skin type, azelaic acid refines the skin surface and tone while inhibiting melanin production, which can reduce pigmentation.

If you are experience rosacea or acne, you might want to try one of these azelaic acid products: Paula’s ChoiceThe Ordinary and Medik8.
