Spotlight on: niacinamide

Last time I wrote about squalane and promised more ingredient info to go along with this and what I’ve already written about retinol.  So, today, let’s talk about niacinamide.

Also known as Vitamin B3, niacinamide is effective for all skin types.  It helps restore even tone, improves dullness and fine lines while restoring the skin’s barrier function and reducing inflammation.  Quite the multi-tasker, right?

Niacinamide is an antioxidant that fights off environmental attack (aka sun exposure), while also improving skin defences over time.  It stimulates collagen production, which helps skin appear more plump. And because our skin barrier weakens as we age, using this ingredient will support this function to keep in what’s needed and prevent entry by what’s not.  It combats redness and blotchiness, which is why niacinamide is perfect for those who suffer from acne and rosacea.

A super-calming ingredient, niacinamide is also helpful for those with sensitive skin particularly when thinking about introducing retinol.  If you start feeding your skin niacinamide about a month before you introduce retinol and continue along with introduction, you’ll find your skin may be less reactive to this active ingredient.

Although I don't use niacinamide year-round, it has been a staple while at the beach this summer.  This niacinamide serum is giving my skin extra support in dealing with my heightened free radical exposure.

Is niacinamide something you need in your routine? What other ingredients are you curious about?
